Class Descriptions

  • Self-Defense ~ This program focuses on defending ones’ self and escaping common hold and defending common attacks. This is perfect for those not wanting to train the sport but would still like to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to defend themselves. Contact Gordon for times when this program will be conducted.
  • Level 1 Jiu-Jitsu ~ This class is for entry level students but open to all. This program is designed to teach the concepts, major positions, and techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A Gi is required to attend. Once you get completed 6 months of this class you will be eligible for the Level 2 program.
  • Level 2 Jiu-Jitsu ~ This program is designed to improve on what we have learned in the Level 1 class. You will be learning the sport more in depth along with drills to hone your skills. You will need to have at least 6 ~ 12 months of training to be accepted into this course. We introduce the No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu class and practice during this program.
  • Judo for Jiu-Jitsu ~ In this class, the students focus on a combination of judo and wrestling as well as more advanced ground maneuvers not taught in the previous programs. We focus on specific drills to develop Gi gripping and throwing skills. All levels are welcome.
  • Wrestling for Jiu-Jitsu ~ (Submission wrestling) Students focus on wrestling and no-gi submission holds. We practice specific drills to develop hand fighting and takedown skills. All levels are welcome.
  • Muay Thai ~ (pronounced “Moy Tie”) This class is for beginners and experienced strikers  to develop devastating Muay Thai striking and clinching skills. Focus is on partner work, hitting pads and focus mitts as well as some light sparring.
  • Open Mat ~ All Charlottesville BJJ students are welcome and encouraged to attend and is included in all programs. No formal warm-up or instruction is given. This is a 2-hour time slot that gives students extra mat time to train with others. Using the time to constantly roll is a great way to understand how to conserve your energy and improve your endurance.
  • Conditioning for Martial Arts ~ All Charlottesville BJJ students are welcome and encouraged to attend. We run a variety of workouts during this time slot using stability balls, kettlebells and gym ropes. This class is focused on improving balance, core strength and fluid movement. The drills will greatly improve your athleticism for Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. This class is for members only.
  • Yoga for Martial Arts ~ This class is to help develop good flexibility, body and breath control as well as a great practice to enhance your Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. This class is for members only.
  • Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ~ This class is for children ages 5-8. Through drills, games and other engaging activities we guide kids along to be good grapplers. With some light grappling play closely supervised by qualified coaches.
  • Jiu-Jitsu Juniors ~ This class is for kids ages 9 – 12. This class is for the older kids mature enough to learn more of the combative techniques not allowed in the kids class. Grappling games are closely supervised by qualified coaches.
  • Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) ~ A class that works on combining striking and grappling within the rules of a Mixed Martial Arts contest. This class in not for beginners. You must receive the instructors permission to attend.
  • Personal Training ~ These training sessions are a catalyst for improving your skills and understanding. A personal or small group class can be made by appointment where you have an hour or more of personal instruction and training. They allow an instructor to assess your current level and abilities and tailor the lesson to your game. They can also be helpful to folks who would like to gain confidence before they enter a group class. Contact Gordon for more information and pricing.
