Class Descriptions

  • Gi Basics – The Charlottesville Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals Program consists of a continuous 24 week course, designed to teach the overall self-defense strategy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It will teach you the basics, from learning how to fall to clinching and successfully setting up and applying submission holds as well as various escapes. This technique repetition filled stage of your training will slowly prepare you to begin drilling at a full resistance in the following program.
  • Gi Class – (pronounced “G-ee”) Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class that involves grappling with a heavy jacket and pants. In this program, you will experience more live training and be exposed to more advanced moves. In this stage of your training experience, you will witness incredible improvement not only on your technique, but your conditioning as well. This Program is designed to expose the student to several different classes and a variety of training experiences, allowing you to develop a unique style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and to further your mastery of the art. As a result, more techniques are taught, the pace of the class is faster and more exciting, the level of the training partners is higher, and last but not least, the focus on little details and timing is what will assist you to take your progress to the next level.
  • No-Gi Class – (pronounced “Noh-G-ee”) (also known as submission wrestling, submission fighting, submission grappling, sport grappling or Combat wrestling in Japan) , is a general term describing the aspect of martial arts and combat sports that focus on clinch and ground fighting with the aim of obtaining a submission using submission holds. The sport of submission wrestling brings together techniques from Folk American Wrestling (Catch-as-catch-can), Luta Livre, Freestyle Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and Sambo. Submission fighting as an element of a larger sport setting is very common in mixed martial arts. The attire for a no-gi class is shorts and a rashguard or t-shirt.
  • Muay Thai - (pronounced “Moy Tie”) The national sport of Thailand, referred to as the art of eight limbs. Muay Thai is known as “King of the Ring” in kickboxing circles. These fights feature punches, kicks, elbows, knees, standing grappling and head-butts to wear down and knock out their opponent. Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardiovascular endurance as well as fighting spirit. Muay Thai training as also quite safe thanks to sophisticated pad training that evolved to keep fighters healthy between fights. Muay Thai has also proven very effective outside the ring and has been embraced enthusiastically by practitioners of a variety of self-defense, sporting, military and law enforcement activities. It has become world renowned for its simplicity and effectiveness.
  • Open Mat – All Cville BJJ students are welcome and encouraged to attend. No formal warm-up or instruction is given. This is a two-hour time slot that gives students extra mat time to train with other students. You can use the time to “roll” or spar, drill technique or hit the thai bags. Using the time to constantly roll is a great way to understand how to conserve your energy and improve your endurance. This is also an excellent cap to the end of the week.
  • Balance Class – All Cville BJJ students are welcome and encouraged to attend. Stability ball training is a great supplement to Jiu-Jitsu training. This class is focused on improving balance, core strength and fluid movement. The drills will greatly improve your athleticism and balance for Jiu-Jitsu.
  • Mixed martial arts (MMA)- A class that works on combining striking and grappling within the rules of a Mixed Martial Arts contest. MMA is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete. This class in not for beginners. You must receive the instructors permission to attend.
