Program Rates and Membership Policies
The goal of our Juniors Program is for students to develop good sportsmanship and a well-rounded Jiu-Jitsu game. With consistent training, your child will develop his/her coordination, balance, and agility, while building confidence and self-defense skills.
Classes consist of a fun warm-up, technical practice with partners, and live matches. At the Juniors level, we introduce takedown techniques and submissions, and therefore a higher level of responsibility is expected in this age group.
Safety is one of our biggest concerns; all training is supervised by qualified instructors and assistant instructors, and our staff and instructors have completed SafeSport training.
The Uniform – Gi & Belt
At this age, we introduce the kimono, or “gi” as it is called in Jiu-Jitsu practice. The Jiu-Jitsu gi is made of thicker material, and has a more tailored fit, than other types of martial arts uniforms. The gi is accompanied by a belt of rank that is worn around the waist. Jiu-jitsu belts have a black bar on one end for awarded stripes. We have both gis and belts for sale at our front desk.
Ranking and Promotion
A student’s rank is based on his/her knowledge, physical skill, length of time training, attitude, and overall quality of movement and understanding. While earning any particular rank is an achievement, it is a mistake to place too much focus on this as an end in and of itself. Focus on training, develop the techniques, have a positive attitude, and everything else will follow naturally.
Our juvenile ranking system progresses as follows: white, gray/white, gray, gray/black, yellow/white, yellow, yellow/black, orange/white, orange, orange/black, green/white, green, green/black. At each belt level/color, the student is awarded four (4) stripes before moving on to the next level/color.
For white belts, promotion is determined by attendance. For every ten (10) classes attended, your child becomes eligible for another stripe on their belt. He/she will also need to memorize and say our student creed:
I promise to use my jiu-jitsu for self-defense and to help others in need.
I promise to keep my jiu-jitsu from harming or bullying others.
We promise to use our jiu-jitsu to lift people up!
Starting at gray/white belt, we require students to demonstrate proper techniques to earn their promotion to a new belt color.
Frequently Asked Questions about our Juniors Program
My child has trained martial arts at another school. Will her rank transfer over?
If you child is coming from another martial art (TaeKwonDo, judo, etc.), they will start jiu-jitsu as a brand-new white belt. There is no transfer of rank from other martial arts.
If you child is coming from another jiu-jitsu school, transfers of rank will be considered on a case-by-case basis, after our instructors are able to observe your child’s training and gauge their abilities, based on our school’s curriculum.
Can my child just attend adult classes?
We will consider requests for teenagers age 14 and up to attend adult classes. At the age of 16, students are eligible to attend adult classes.
